Fun in the Water!

Pool Access Included with Membership

Open Swim and Lap Swim at the YMCA are member benefits, giving you access to our pools during scheduled times for fitness, recreation, and family fun.

Whether you are swimming laps for exercise, enjoying time with your kids, or relaxing in the water, our pools are designed to be welcoming, safe, and accessible for all ages and abilities.

Understanding Pool Use

Lap Swim

Lap Swim is a reserved time for continuous swimming and water-based workouts in designated lap lanes. To make space for everyone, lanes may be shared during busier times.

Lap Swim is ideal for:

  • Fitness and endurance training
  • Low-impact cardiovascular exercise
  • Independent or self-paced swimming

Open Swim

Open Swim is a recreational pool time for families and individuals. Activities may include casual swimming and water play in designated areas.

Open Swim is ideal for:

  • Families and youth
  • Casual or recreational swimmers
  • Members looking for relaxed pool time

Designed with Accessibility in Mind

YMCA pools are built to support comfort, safety, and inclusion:

  • Zero-depth entry at both Sherwood and Clark County YMCA locations, allowing gradual entry into the water
  • Warm water temperatures that support comfort and muscle relaxation
  • Multiple pool spaces to accommodate lap swimming, recreation, and programs

Everyone deserves to feel confident and comfortable in the water.

Pool Facts You Might Not Know

  • Swimming is a low-impact, full-body workout that is easy on the joints
  • Water exercise can burn calories efficiently while reducing stress on muscles
  • In most lap pools, one mile equals about 35 laps
  • YMCA pools circulate and filter the full volume of water multiple times per day to maintain cleanliness and safety

To keep our pools safe and enjoyable for everyone, all members and guests are expected to follow YMCA pool rules and staff direction.

These include:

  • Age and supervision guidelines

The primary role of our YMCA Lifeguards is the prevention of drowning. Our first defense against drowning is proactively restricting non-swimmers and inexperienced swimmers to shallow water and having constant adult supervision. The restrictions are monitored via color-coded wristbands.

Shallow water is defined as water that is no deeper than your armpit.

Our Swim Band Tests for kids ensure they can use our pools outside their swim lessons. Children receive color-coded wristbands for their ability to swim in different areas of our pool.

All persons 13 years of age and younger are evaluated and banded each visit. All persons 13 years of age and younger must wear appropriate color-coded wristbands at all times when they are in or around the pool area. Those not complying will be asked to leave the pool.
