2024 Front Nine Sponsors

1. Conquering Water Fears

Thanks to the YMCA and their Open Door program, my kids can swim. I have 3 kids (10, 8 & 6), and my middle child had a deathly fear of the water. Thanks to the Open Door program and the wonderful instructors, my oldest two children are now able to swim in the Jr Swim Team and my youngest is in Level 3. I feel confident that my kids are safe near bodies of water.

2. Community Tournament Success

In Vancouver, Serena Taualo, our Leader of Youth Development for Sports and Camps, recently organized her first basketball tournament for our community campaign, “Growing Our Future.” The event was a huge success, bringing together players and spectators for a fun-filled evening of basketball and community spirit. Serena’s dedication and enthusiasm highlight the impact of our programs and the importance of community engagement in making a difference.

3. Path to Stability

The staff at our Harvey Scott YMCA Program were approached last year by a woman who said she and her family were living in a shelter, and she needed to secure after-school care for her youngest son to get a job. Staff helped her get connected to funding sources to cover her childcare costs and enrolled her son in our program. Now, she is working full-time at a job she enjoys, and through the support of the YMCA, she and her children will be able to leave the shelter and secure their own housing soon.

4. Love and Basketball

David and Sarah are members of the Beaverton YMCA, and their sons have been important to the developmental basketball program the last few seasons. They have talked about how much the basketball program is helping their boys develop their skills. It is not only preparing them to play competitively, but the boys are also making new friends through the basketball program. They have also talked about how beneficial it is for them to be members and work out upstairs, while Landon and Kaedon have basketball practice. It benefits the entire family.

5. Sean’s Journey

My name is Sean Lambird, and the Y has been my second home for 15 years. Starting at the Clark County YMCA in high school, I’ve grown through roles in various departments, supported my education with Y funding, and now work as Youth Programs Coordinator at the Morgan Family YMCA. The Y has enriched my life, and I strive to give back to my community every day.

6. Full Circle Camp Experience

As a child, I frequently attended YMCA camps. Entering the camps on the first day, I remember feeling overwhelmed and nervous meeting new kids. I vividly remember the YMCA camp counselors always supporting me and helping me feel like I belong. Now as a 21-year-old person, I have the pleasure of working as a camp counselor for the summer camp at Templeton Elementary School. I feel extremely grateful to be able to positively impact a child’s experience at summer camp just as the camp counselors positively impacted my experience.

7. Thurston’s YMCA Home

Thurston thrived in the YMCA’s programs - always wanting to be there early and stay late. It became like a second home and was the starting place for fast friendships that are still going strong today. Next steps? Thurston would love to be a camp counselor at Camp Collins.

8. Hanna Finds Belonging

Hanna, an 11-year-old with autism and sensory issues, has shown significant growth and development in 2024. She began participating in camps last spring and takes swimming lessons at the Clark County Family YMCA. Her family values the Y because it provides Hanna with a sense of belonging where she feels heard and seen. It's the only organization where Hanna feels truly comfortable participating. Looking ahead, Hanna aspires to become a Junior Counselor, inspired by the role models and support she has found at the Y.

9. Angel’s Triumph

Since joining our youth basketball program in Fall 2023, 9-year-old Angel has shown tremendous growth and dedication. Initially, Angel was quite shy and new to the sport, but with the guidance of her coach and encouragement from her teammates, she has blossomed both on and off the court. Angel’s hard work and perseverance paid off in a significant way when she scored her first basket during the Spring 2024 season. This milestone not only marked a personal achievement but also highlighted her remarkable improvement and increasing confidence.

11. Chris Finds Joy

“When we dropped Chris off at River Village, he was nervous about the rustic cabins and now knowing anyone. There was a moment when I thought he was going to ask us to take him home. He stayed and we were nervous all week we’d get a call asking us to come pick him up. Then, on Friday, he didn’t want to leave! His camp shirt was covered with signatures from all his new friends. He couldn’t stop talking about the aerial park. And best of all, he already wants to sign up for next summer. Thank you so much for a great week. See you next year! “ - Chris’s Mom

12. Home and Happiness

The Y has been our home away from home since we moved to Sherwood in 2014. From youth sports and swimming lessons to Parents’ Night Out and Y Time. The Y has allowed our kids to have a safe outlet to burn energy and allowed us to have time to exercise and build relationships in the community. We all come home happier and healthier.

15. Supportive Staff Helps Riker

“I just want to say how amazing the Teacher at the Beaverton Youth Development Center is. Riker was only supposed to stay a month (now 9 months later). The staff have a natural, empathetic way of understanding kiddos' behaviors and interests. They’ve been so helpful with Riker's separation anxiety and helping him cope when I have to leave. “ - Riker’s Mom

16. Essential Support for Families

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette has bent over backward to make sure our family has quality care after school as well as during school breaks, including providing care during the most recent PPS teacher's strike. My son is happy and engaged with YMCA counselors and activities. As a single working mother, I don't know what I would do without them.

17. Support During Strike

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette’s Central region responded swiftly when Portland Public Schools teachers went on strike, leaving many families without options. Our team worked diligently to open full-day care at our Southeast YMCA and our Moda Tower location downtown, providing care for more than 170 children while the teachers were on strike. By providing a safe, nurturing environment for kids, we aimed to ease the burden on parents affected by school closures.

18. A Place to Thrive

Andrew, a bright 10-year-old recently diagnosed with autism, faced challenges fitting in and bullying at school. His journey improved when his mother joined the YMCA for the family. At the Y, both Andrew and his sister found a supportive, inclusive environment where they could thrive. Their mother gained peace of mind, knowing her children were safe and loved. The YMCA has become a place of growth and acceptance for the whole family.

1. Camp Songs and Smiles

“What did you do to my kid? She had such a good time, came home in such a good mood, and continues to bounce around the house singing camp songs I've never heard. I don’t know how you do what you do, but I need to learn some of your tricks! After a year of hard experiences in our family, seeing her shine brings hope to my heart. Hearing her sing again makes the whole world brighter. Thank you thank you thank you!” - Brandi’s Dad

In Vancouver, our youth sports programs are transforming lives. Meet Sarah, a high school student who found her passion for basketball through our YMCA. With the support of her coaches and teammates, Sarah has developed confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of belonging that extends beyond the court. Her story is a testament to the power of sports in shaping the future of our youth.
