About YMCA Camp Duncan's Woods
Duncan Campbell, prominent Portland business leader and advocate for at-risk youth in our community, had a vision: to serve the most disadvantaged and fragile youth of our community in an overnight resident camp. Campbell purchased 160 acres of land near Trillium Lake in the Mt. Hood National Forest and waited to find the right partner to put his vision into action.
The YMCA shared Campbell's vision to help support kids in at risk situations. Together the YMCA and Duncan Campbell aim to strengthen youth's choice making skills, leadership skills and interpersonal skills while embracing the YMCA mission.
Earlier in 2017, the State of Oregon approved building permits for us to begin building on the property.
On Aug. 13–18, a group of 8–12 youth, our Executive Director and several other Y staff will participate in a pilot camp experience. Youth will explore the vastness of Camp Duncan's Wood’s 160 acres of land as they journey on fun day hikes in the Mt. Hood National Forest and experience life in the wild. On this week-long tent camping program, campers will experience outdoor wilderness living skills, such as natural shelter construction, fire building, emergency preparedness, habitat and environmental restoration, navigation and more. Campers will gain personal growth and develop skills in the wilderness. Contact Executive Director, Brian Hanners for more information on how you can get involved.
