Awaken Summer Imagination
Summer is just around the corner and with it children break from the routine. Mornings are spent sleeping in, afternoons are spent watching television or playing video games in the cool air conditioning and evenings are spent enjoying a nice ice cream cone before bed. It may sound great, but a summer spent like this can have lasting negative effects.
Kids are less physically active and engaged in learning during the summer months and research shows that children gain weight two to three times faster than during the school year. In addition to that, kids can fall behind academically because they don't have access to out-of-school learning opportunities.
With this in mind, on Saturday, Apr. 4 from 10 AM–1 PM we will be hosting YMCA's Healthy Kids Day® which is the Y's largest national youth initiative, bringing children and families together through activities and education that inspire healthy habits in the summer months and year-round.
We know that kids gain weight faster during the summer months and that youth from low income neighborhoods are disproportionately affected by summer learning loss due to limited or no access to reading materials outside of school. Healthy Kids Day® is our annual, nationwide initiative designed to inspire all youth, parents, and caregivers—regardless of membership status—to get active and make healthy choices over the summer and beyond.
Healthy Kids Day® is our largest single-day event celebrating youth development across the United States.
